Has your silly puppy been using your rug as a bathroom?
You are in good company. Many puppy parents have stood over a suspicious wet spot on the carpet, wondering what went wrong. The good news is this behavior is completely normal, and with time and consistency, it gets better.
Why It Happens
Before you let frustration take over, remember this — your puppy is not trying to misbehave. Every puppy is simply navigating a new world as they learn how “potty rules” work. Puppies are not born with instructions, but they are guided by instinct. That instinct tells them to go wherever it feels safe and absorbent. Rugs, with their soft and cozy texture, often feel like the perfect place.
Here’s What You Can Do
-
🐾 Create a Schedule
Take your puppy outside often — first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, and before bedtime. Consistency builds confidence. -
🐾 Be Observant
Watch for the signs that your puppy needs to go. If they are sniffing, circling, whining, or suddenly getting quiet, they are likely about to relieve themselves. Catch them early and guide them outside to finish. -
🐾 Celebrate Each Success
When your puppy pees outside, celebrate like it is a big win. Cheer, offer treats, and praise them warmly. Positive reinforcement makes it more likely they will repeat the good behavior. -
🐾 Remove Rugs
If needed, take rugs out of common areas until your puppy becomes more reliable. Once they are consistent, you can reintroduce one rug at a time and observe whether accidents continue. -
🐾 Clean Thoroughly
If there has been an accident, lift the rug and clean the area with an enzyme-based cleaner. Even if you no longer smell anything, your dog probably can. Lingering scent encourages repeat accidents.
Be Kind, Be Patient
Potty training is a journey, not a quick fix. Accidents will happen, and that is perfectly okay. As a dog parent, try to stay calm, loving, and consistent. You are learning together.
