Can Campfire Smoke Harm Your Dog? What You Should Know

Can Campfire Smoke Harm Your Dog? What You Should Know

There is nothing better than the happy warmth of a campfire while watching the stars. As a caring pet parent, you might be wondering: Is campfire smoke safe for my dog? We are here to guide you along the safe path of experiencing the great outdoors with your dog.

Can Dogs be Around a Campfire?

Dogs can really enjoy the nature of camping, but safety is paramount:

  • Keep your dog a reasonable distance from the campfire: 6–10 feet is advised. This will limit exposure to both getting burned and smoke.

  • When placing your dog before the fire, check that the wind is blowing the smoke away from their face.

  • Also have some fresh water handy for hydration and to cool them down if necessary.

Signs of Smoke Inhalation in Dogs

Be on the lookout for signs that your dog is inhaling too much smoke:

  • Coughing or wheezing

  • Breathing difficulty, or panting quickly

  • Red or irritated eyes

  • Salivating more than normal

  • Significant lethargy or weakness

If you see any of these signs, remove your dog to fresh air and contact your veterinarian. Quick action can make all the difference!

Why Dogs May Be Afraid of Bonfires

New flickering flames, pops from the crackling wood, and the unfamiliar campfire smell may frighten some dogs. Dogs will instinctively fear fire as a result of their heritage. Along with all this, the noise or heat of the fire may add to their fright. Understanding your dog's feelings of fright will allow you to mentally support your dog, without judgement, and help it feel better.

Bonfire Safety for Your Dog

Once the fire subsides, keep your dog safe by taking a few simple precautions:

  • Make sure the fire is completely out before allowing your dog to approach the fire area.

  • Be careful of embers or ashes that are still hot and may burn your dog's paws.

  • Make sure your dog does not have access to the firewood piles, or any debris left behind by the campfire or bonfire.

  • Use a leash or secure area to prevent your dog's free-roaming around the campfire, and checking out the dangerous areas.

Prepare for a Great Outdoor Experience

Camping with your dog is a great bonding experience while exploring the outdoors together. Remembering to keep an eye on safety and discomfort signs will go a long way in providing fun, healthy outdoor experiences for your dog.

If you have any questions or concerns about how your dog's health may be affected by campfires or outdoor activities, please revisit your local veterinarian.
