If your holiday season looks anything like the one we’ve experienced, let me guess, you probably have twinkly lights, cozy nights, and a curious pup sniffing around in the kitchen while you bake those holiday cookies! It has become our tradition at our house to make some holiday homemade treats for our four-legged family member too—whatever the holiday, it is as expected as ugly sweaters and way too much hot cocoa. Let’s face it, they’ve been pretty good this year (well, most of the time).
But we get the thought you having right now...
"Can dogs even eat holiday treats?"
Yes, and I can see why you ask! Not everything that delights our taste buds is safe for our furry friends. Ingredients (chocolate, raisins, nutmeg) can now be very dangerous. This is why we've put together this easy, healthy dog-friendly recipe that is safe, yummy and festive!
Santa's Sweet Potato Bites for Good Boys & Girls
What you'll need:
-
1 cup cooked, mashed sweet potato (plain—no sugar or spices added)*
-
2 ½ cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for tummy sensitive pups)
-
2 eggs
-
½ cup eggnog
-
Festive cookie cutters (bone is classic, but stars are okay too!)
How To:
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl to form dough.
-
Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick.
-
Cut out shapes with your chosen cookie cutters.
-
Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
-
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.
-
Let treats cool completely before taste-testing (and by taste-test I mean let your dog try!)
Fun Fact
Sweet potatoes are full of fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamins that are great for dogs and the best part, they are naturally sweet and doggy approved!
